IRENE (CONT’D)

It’s the N.W.L. dance, the Negro

Welfare League, you know. I’m on the

ticket committee, or rather, I am the

committee. Thank heaven it comes off

tomorrow night and doesn’t happen

again for a year.

CLARE

That wasn’t the Hugh Wentworth?

Irene nods with a tiny triumphant smile.

IRENE

Yes. D’you know him?

CLARE

How should I? But I’ve read a book

or two of his.

IRENE

Awfully good, aren’t they?

CLARE

Sort of contemptuous, I thought. As

if he more or less despised everything

and everybody.
